The Tasting

Arrived in: Draft

Served in: 8oz glass

A “classic british style ale.”

Unfortunately we don’t have a time machine to validate the above tagline, but Olde Ale seemed very authentic to me.

British soldiers could very well have been drinking an ale just like this one the night their tea was thrown into the Boston Harbor.

Olde Ale was packed with malt, to the point that it resembled a hearty barleywine. And it was just as filling – after an 8 oz glass I was feeling very satisfied.

This thicker ale was also quite sweet, but not overdone. It started malty, with plum fruit, followed by more sugary sweetness. What was most surprising was its dry finish, which you would not expect from an ale on the sweeter side.

I enjoy heavier beers like this, which are often hard to come by, so I might have enjoyed it more for that reason.

Final Score: 4/5

As advertised, Olde Ale was a throwback, and I would even go as far as to call it historical. It just had to be what beer was like centuries ago. It just had to… I find it hard not recommend Olde Ale, unless strong ales are not your forte.
