I rented a bike when I first moved to Chiang Mai.
Very cheap and I ride every day now on my own bike.
Never give your Passport as guarantee , last I hear a puke gen. passport goes for B40,000 on the black market,. Many,most places will tell you truethfuly full insurance, they mean the government compulsory insurance, that every bike must have. This is good for about B15,000 of pure medical cover for you and whoever you have an accident with. Proper comprehensive cover is now possible for self owned bikes but I don’t – think so for rented bikes.
I used to leave my UK driving license. when I rented bikes.
Take care, both I and my Thai friends know more folk killed in car crashes than on bikes.

My god petrol’s cheap there! 40 baht for a week?!
It's a must to rent a motorbike when outside of Bangkok, especially if you are staying for several days. I would never rent one in Bangkok, you will get killed. Be careful, lots of stories of people getting killed on these. I met the parents of a 21 year old (teacher) at my school who came to collect his body, as he had run into a cement utility pole, after being at his girlfriend's all night.
Why do you need a motorcycle there? Can’t you just walk everywhere or use Taxis or Grab bikes?
