A Brief History
AleSmith was founded in 1995 by Skip Virgilio and Ted Newcomb. The business was then sold to head brewmaster Peter Zien in 2002. Peter is a Grand Master level 1 beer judge — the only one of his kind in all of San Diego county.
If you like high alcohol content beer, you will appreciate Alesmith, since almost half of their creations are over 8.5% ABV. Their ales are bottle conditioned, and only sold in 22oz bombers, or champagne style 750ml — never 12oz bottles.

Our Visit to AleSmith
Alesmith is located in a Miramar business park.
FYI — they don’t allow kids in their tasting room.
Their facility is small, but understandably so, since Alesmith prides itself on small production. If you pick a seat at the right edge of the bar, you can see the bottling line.
AleSmith keeps their whole roster of year round bottled brews on tap, along with a short list of tap room only exclusives. To ensure their beer makes it to the masses, they do not allow growler fills on many of their special tasting room recipes, only small oz’s and tasters.
Their tap room had the same ambiance as a wine country tasting room — barrels used for tables, many racked along the walls, with the current tasting menu written on chalkboards.
We recommend getting there early, cause after a few tour vehicles show up standing room is at a premium.
