Brewer’s Notes and Ingredients
Fruity hop notes from Citra and Mosaic, combined with a hint of real tangerine peel, create a bright crushable pale ale. Yes, we said ‘hint’ of tangerine. By design, this brew is well balanced. We don’t hit you over the head with tangerine. This is beer, not a fruit cocktail. We’re focused on brewing great beer for you, instead of marketing cute hop rhymes. We simply went with ‘Clever Hoppy Name’ and continued brewing. Would you have it any other way?
Hops: Citra and Mosaic
Additional: Tangerine peel

Earlier this year we decided to review Second Chance’s Clever Hoppy Name releases for 2017, and picked up the trail with #2 in the series — an excellent Rye IPA with Comet hops. That beer was followed up by another Rye based recipe using Citra and Amarillo, which was also quite tasty.
Now we are getting our own second chance to write about the inaugural beer in the series (from fall of 2016), since Clever Hoppy Name XPA is actually a re-release of that recipe in pint cans. As confirmed by Second Chance Beer Company, this beer is a new canned year round offering, while their rotational hop series will move forward under a yet-to-be-determined moniker.
Second Chance Clever Hoppy Name poured a semi-transparent golden hue with lazy trails of effervescence visible along the side of the glass. Its reduced carbonation resulted in a moderate stack of white, finely whipped head that lasted through a few sips.
There are no official style guidelines for XPA (extra pale ale) but our best interpretation would be a less malty American Pale Ale, akin to a session IPA. For a lighter style ale, Clever Hoppy Name’s aroma was impressively bold, with a touch of maltiness paired with peachy aromatics and citrus.
On the palate, this XPA challenged “bigger” styles once again. Up front Clever Hoppy Name was tropical and juicy from Citra, followed by Mosaic’s tangy citrus. Some fruited beers use a brute force addition of fruit, but this hop bill sang a perfect tune with the tangerine peel addition.
The tangerine flavors enhanced the already lasting citrus, and extended the finish with some extra bitterness. It was hard to believe this beer checked in at only 38 IBUs, and Second Chance absolutely lived up to their promise to not overdue the fruit, since we never even knew it was in the first batch of this beer last fall.
It’s hard not to want to have a few of these beers in a row, since they’re so crushable but also deliver the hoppy goodness with added tanginess. Beer geek palates tend to work in the opposite direction, but we are enjoying this canned iteration of Clever Hoppy Name even more than what was first on draft last fall.
Final Score: 4/5
Best enjoyed fresh for added tangerine zing! Clever Hoppy Name was a fruit-based beer done right — with balance, yet still packed a hoppy punch along with lasting refreshing citrus notes that brought us back for more.
