The Tasting

Arrived in: Bottle

Served in: Bottle

During a trip to North Carolina, I thought it’d be a good idea to pick up a 6 pack of regional beer to try. The sheriff and his six shooter jumped off the shelf at me, so I chose Lonerider Peacemaker Pale Ale.

Our hotel room did not have glasses, only white plastic cups, so I opted to drink straight out of the bottle. Looking back, I guess I should have tried pouring a touch into the plastic, just to take a peek at. My bad.

Initially, Peacemaker comes across more like a brown, or darker style ale. It feels a little heavier in texture than most pale ales typically do. But it does lighten up the more you drink it.

The flavor starts a tad metallic, giving way to a bready, almost nutty finish from Lonerider’s “special blend” of malts. You can tell Peacemaker is on the stronger side, but the malts drowned out the hops I look for in a pale ale.

But just because the common pale ale taste profile was missing, did not mean Peacemaker was a bad beer. While drinking it, I imagined the brewers were paying homage to what they thought ale was like back in the old frontier.

Final Score: 2.5/5

I would recommend Lonerider Peacemaker Pale Ale, with the stipulation that it profiles closer to a strong ale, than west coast style pale ale, as the brewer suggests. This beer would probably pair great with pizza, but we didn’t have any of that, or proper beer drinking glasses…
