The Tasting

Arrived in: 500ML Bottle

Served in: Wine Glass

Last month Toolbox Brewing Company unleashed a wave of funkiness with several different bottles of fruited beers, two of which were grapefruit based. We knew we wanted to review one of their tangy creations, and Sara decided on this Spring Shandy, since it sounded super tart, but also showcased one of her favorite flavors — ginger.

It’s worth noting that this beer was “shandy inspired” — not technically a shandy — which is a lager with juice or soda mixed in. This shandy was actually a Berliner Weisse, and as the name implies, it was brewed with grapefruit and ginger.

Spring Shandy was hazy dark yellow or apricot in color, with a thin covering of quickly evaporating froth. Its nose was very citrusy, and smelled like an all-natural, hand squeezed lemonade your grandma would make. We had never really considered a funky beer to be so aromatic, but we couldn’t help ourselves from constantly sniffing at this one.

Obviously Berliner’s are tart, but Spring Shandy was not overly done, with a hint of sweetness from its natural fruit flavors. It started off with a moderate level of tartness, that got more puckery from the grapefruit.

As it headed into to the finish the ginger root came into play, and cut down on the acidity. The tart grapefruit citrus juice and ginger spice balanced each other out wonderfully in this beer, yet still managed to leave a nice lingering tartness behind after each sip.

Spring Shandy featured a light and crisp body that led to maximum refreshment. This beer would do even better during the heat of summer, so we were happy to see that Toolbox got another batch of bottles cranked out last week. We will definitely be picking up some more of this special release to keep on hand for a heatwave.

Final Score: 4/5

4 Stars

Toolbox Spring Shandy was as advertised, and very refreshing. Many ingredient based beers don’t live up to their billing, but both the ginger and grapefruit were in harmony and allowed plenty of tartness, without being too overpowering.
