The official name of this beer is “American Strong Ale”, but I think it might also be known as “1st Anniversary Strong Ale”. If they aren’t the same brew, this one is a variation on the 1st Anniversary recipe. Next time we go to the tasting room, I will inquire, and post an update if needed.
UPDATE 9/5/13: I spoke with a beertender in the tasting room. Green Flash American Strong Ale = 1st Anniversary Strong Ale.
As the name suggests, this is most definitely a strong ale. So if you don’t like heavier beer in either alcohol content, or texture, do not bother with this one.
With that being said, American Strong Ale is one of my favorite Green Flash creations, and I have to get at least a taster of it anytime we go in for a growler fill.
This ale is on the dense side, with less carbonation. You can tell how many drinks you’ve had from the glass by its droopy lacing.
American Strong Ale reminds me of an extra hopped pale ale, with a smooth, yet slightly bitter finish, with a very slight hint of strawberries.
Final Score: 4/5
As I mentioned above, Green Flash American Strong Ale lives up to its namesake, in both weight and percentage. Green Flash brews better offerings than this one, but its still one of my favorites, since it balances strength with a smooth finish.
