Looking for an alternative to “regular old beer” during a heatwave, we stumbled upon Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer. It seemed like a good way to beat the heat, and we had never tried ginger beer before. Well, at least any that had alcohol in it…

According to the bottle neck hanger, old John Crabbie was a Scottish merchant and adventurer, who first brought real ginger back from the far east to Scotland in 1801. Two hundred plus years later, and the top secret Crabbie family recipe is still going strong today.

Following the directions on the bottle neck hanger, (yes, this beer includes directions) Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer is meant to be served in 4 easy steps, like so:

  1. Take a chilled bottle out of the fridge.
  2. Fill a glass with ice.
  3. Tilt the glass and pour.
  4. Drop a lemon or lime wedge into the glass.

We have tried both lemon and lime, and the consensus is lime beats lemon. The lime makes it more exotic, and also adds a more sour contrast to the ginger. As far as the ice goes, Mike prefers crushed, Sara prefers cubed. Just in case you were wondering…

Crabbie’s started with a rich, creamy, ginger tasting foam frosting, that unfortunately died off quickly – probably from coming into contact with the ice cubes. And unfortunate, because the first few sips with the gingery froth were the best drinks of the glass.

We were not sure what to expect for taste, since its a hybrid ginger and beer ale. It more closely resembled a ginger ale, than a beer. But it also tastes way more natural than ginger ale — less sugary, syrupy, and soda like.

As fans of hot food, it was a pleasant surprise to find such a spicy kick to the beer. Its like liquified ginger you would get on your plate at a sushi restaurant. As a matter of fact, Crabbie’s would pair amazingly with any spicy Asian meal. Between the lively ginger, and the ice cubes, your upper lip tingles.

Crabbie’s may have a spicy kick, but it was also a thirst quencher during hot weather. I mean, how often do you get to enjoy a beer in a glass filled with ice? With minimal carbonation, peppery stinging ginger bubbles washed into your mouth over cold ice cubes.

Be careful, these go down quick, so the low ABV is probably a good thing. It’s all you can do to keep from pounding the whole glass – “It’s so good when it hits your lips…”

We have to recommend Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer to any beer drinker, just to try it. Guessing it will be a love hate reaction, based on your affinity to ginger. Crabbies makes a whole army of fruit flavored versions, and we look forward to trying them all.
