Brewer’s Notes and Ingredients

Just like its golden envelope-pushing counterpart, Stone Enjoy By Black IPA is intensely hoppy and should be enjoyed über fresh to experience its vibrant stone and tropical fruit flavors and dankness. This double IPA’s dark-colored malt canvas comes from German Sinamar and from Patagonia Black Pearl barley, which adds a pleasingly smooth taste. The hop profile is predominantly Australian, featuring down-under wonders Vic Secret, Ella and Galaxy. Stone Enjoy By Black IPA is shipped immediately to ensure hopheads get their hands on it as soon as possible, as it is brewed specifically NOT to last.

Hops: Vic Secret, Ella, and Galaxy

The Tasting

Arrived in: 22oz. Bottle

Served in: Short Tulip

As referenced above, Enjoy By 11.27.15 Black IPA was the first run of bottles in Stone Brewing’s new subset to their highly acclaimed Enjoy By series. Billed as the “dark side of fresh”, it was limited to California, but we’re not exactly sure how wide of a net Stone threw for distribution. Around San Diego, it was not in every single spot the usual Enjoy By can be found, so it may have gone quick, not a lot of places stocked it, or both.

Earlier this year Stone went on a killing spree, and ended the lives of some of their longtime staple beers, like Levitation Ale (still bummed about that one) and Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA. According to Mitch Steele, Sublimely did serve as inspiration for the new Enjoy By Black:

Because of the success with Stone Enjoy By IPA, and to soften the grief of having lost Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous from our full-time lineup, Greg felt that it would be really interesting to brew a black version of the beer.

We are still waiting on our Levitation consolation prize, but for those upset about Sublimely Self-Righteous should stop worrying. Enjoy By 11.27.15 Black IPA is a reincarnate of Sublimely, brewed with fruity Australian hops — and one amazing IPA at that…

Enjoy By Black IPA poured an extremely porous head that resembled a cross section of swiss cheese – lots of different sized “holes” in its cream colored crown. Its cap slowly shrunk away, leaving behind plenty of cobwebs on the sides of the tulip, and a thin coating of froth. This medium bodied dark ale boasted a ridiculously mellow mouthfeel. Blindfolded, we would have guessed we were sipping on a stout.

This Black IPA was not as intensely aromatic as its original Enjoy By counterpart, with mostly notes of dark malt. It was also somewhat boozy, which should not be a shocker with a black IPA that clocked in at a healthy 9.4%. As it warmed, we got wafts of tropical fruit, which brings us to its groundbreaking mash-up of amazing flavors.

Much like any black IPA up front, Enjoy By 11.27.15 featured ample dark roasted malt, and a quick hit of pine. But in the finish, something unexpected for the black IPA style happened — it got tropical! Not like its nose didn’t give that away earlier, but still…

Up front, a pleasing tropical blend of pineapple and mango fruits mixed with a touch of pine. With a drying effect, ample dark roast and tobacco came back under the fruit, for a trademark black IPA finish that evaporated on the palate. This ale was dark, bold, and strong, yet also refined by the use of fruity hops.

Who knew tropical flavors could work so well in the black IPA realm of pine and dark malts? We did not — and consider us impressed…

Hopefully Stone is able to ramp up production on Enjoy By Black IPA in 2016, because the rest of the country will go nuts for it. Until then, we’ll just keep reaping the benefits of living in America’s Finest (beer) City.

Final Score: 4.5/5

4.5 Stars

The craft beer universe needs more quality black IPAs like this one, so maybe we “enjoyed more” for that reason. Regardless, Stone Enjoy By Black IPA was a breath of fresh air in the ever-so-crowded IPA scene for its pairing of dark malts with bright, tropical hops.
