Brewer’s Notes and Ingredients

After brewing this intense double IPA with more than 10 different hops and consistently delivering it faster than any bottled IPA on the planet, we decided to do something different with this Stone Enjoy By IPA—we took it to another level, again. Puréed tangerines were added to the batch to create a devastatingly fresh IPA with a tang of tangerine. The flavors yielded by this addition to the recipe meld beautifully with the bitterness of the hops. True to this series, Stone Enjoy By Tangerine IPA is brewed specifically NOT to last, and should be enjoyed within 37 days.

Hops: Nugget, Super Galena, Simcoe, Delta, Target, Amarillo, Cascade, Galaxy, Citra, Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, and Helga

Malts: N/A

Additional: Puréed tangerines

The Tasting

Arrived in: 22oz. Bottle

Served in: Short Tulip

2016 has been the year of the citrus fruit IPA. It’s not even halfway through the year, and we are starting to get burned out on the style. But like Michael Corleone said in the Godfather III, “just when I thought I was out, they pull you back in.”

So here we are, doing what we thought we were going to stop doing — drinking fruited IPAs. What dragged us back in? We don’t review every Enjoy By bottle, but want to be sure to check out each of their new variation releases when they drop, like the debut of this Enjoy by 05.30.16 Tangerine IPA.

Being a tangerine fruit infused India Pale Ale, it was so fitting that Enjoy By 05.31.16’s color was vibrant orange. The ale was extremely clear, and we were surprised there wasn’t some pulpy particulate floating around from the tangerines. As a matter of fact, Stone’s “Unfiltered” release was more hazy than this one.

On the nose, Enjoy by Tangerine was resinous with pine undercurrents and citrus peel. It featured a very fresh and zesty aroma, and was just as tangy on the tastebuds.

Up front it was piney, which quickly transitioned over to a bouquet of bright citrus flavors. The massive blend of hops used to brew this IPA offered up orangey citrus on its own. As its dry finish kicked in, Enjoy By’s tangerine infusion accentuated that natural citrus hop flavor with a boost of more bitter tangerine.

The all-natural citrus fruit in the finish definitely made the beer more tangy. If you were expecting a cloudy, pulpy tangerine bomb, then you might be disappointed. On the other hand, we thought its gentle nudge of tangerine worked nicely to enhance the overall citrus profile.

Up to this point, Enjoy By Black IPA is still our top dog in the Enjoy By family. Who knows what iterations Stone has in store for the craft beer community next year in 2017, but we look forward to seeing how they stack up.

Final Score: 4/5

4 Stars

Enjoy by 05.30.16 Tangerine IPA was quite similar to many of Stone’s previous “regular” Enjoy By releases, but what set it apart was that little extra kick of juicy citrus. The tangerine was not overdone, and tasted very natural.
