Brewer’s Notes and Ingredients

Citra hops are stupid good. They’re so good we’d be doing the beer community a disservice by not reuniting this hop with your mouth-hole every now and again. This hop showers your tastebuds with juicy layers of mango, lemongrass, and grapefruit. Look forward to more upcoming releases in the Showers series of single-hopped Double IPAs.

The Tasting

Arrived in: 22oz. Bottle

Served in: Specialty IPA Glass

Holy Citra! This IPA was criminally delicious…

As a matter of fact, we feel it’s the best IPA on the market today. Just like Travolta said in Pulp Fiction, “that’s a bold statement”, and we will gladly take his drug dealer’s “Pepsi challenge” with this Double IPA any day of the week. Citra Showers was that good.

Noble Ale Works’ “Showers” are an on-going series where a single hop IPA is brewed with a different hop varietal each time. It’s nothing new for breweries to highlight a single hop, but what we enjoy most about their project is they’re Double IPAs. So not only is said hop in its purest form, and more intense as a double, but it also packs a heftier ABV.

After being poured, Citra Showers showed off that ideal bright coppery to light caramel color we look for in an IPA. The medium-bodied ale was slightly hazed over, with a 1-2 finger tall head that dissipated somewhat quickly. By the time we were ready to smell and taste, the fluffy white froth was cut in half.

Citra Showers’ aroma was straight up melon and stone fruit, like a blend of honeydew and peach. Or maybe nectarine and mango, or any other pleasing tropical aromatic blend you could dream up. Hopslam was one of the most aromatic ales we’ve ever had, and Citra Showers slammed it to the curb.

We drank Citra Showers from our specialty IPA glass, which only intensified the aroma. As we tipped the Spiegelau back to take a sip, our nostrils got a nice whiff of ripe fruit to “sip” on, just as our taste buds got wet down with the best aspect of this beer — its make-you-drool-flavor.

Noble Ale Works Citra Showers tasted like melon up front, then got a little resiny with a hint of drying pine. Its mouthfeel was ridiculously smooth at that point, where the juicy citrus piled on for the finish. The heavy showers of grapefruity goodness left our palates coated with lingering sticky bitterness after each drink.

This India Pale Ale was in fact dank, and resinous, and sticky, and whatever other buzzwords get egregiously thrown around IPAs these days. Noble Ale Works put Citra hops on a pedestal, and showcased all of the intense citrus and tropical notes that variety of humulus lupulus has to offer.

The only way this beer could get any better is if there was a special “fresh hop” Citra Showers release.

Final Score: 5/5

5 Stars

Noble Ale Works has set the bar for perfection among the style with their Citra Showers Double IPA. They brewed an absolute masterpiece that was pungent with tropical aroma, and stomped our taste buds with pure Citra deliciousness.
