Welcome to San Diego, Founders Brewing Co!
Having already tried KBS months ago, All Day IPA was the Founders release we were most excited to try next. Which was weird, since neither of us are huge Session Ale fans. But the reputation preceding this beer as one of the best SIPAs out there had piqued our interest.
Founders All Day IPA poured a beautiful iridescent gold to copper hue. When held up to the light for a closer exam, you could just make out your handprint on the other side of the glass. This SIPA was highly effervescent, with many trails of fast rising bubbles to maintain its thin coating of froth.
We feel a mild aroma is fairly indicative to the session IPA style, so we were not expecting All Day IPA top be an aromatic powerhouse. Its mild bouquet offered slight notes of floral hops layered over mild grain.
Many session ales end up tasting like bland gutless hop water, but one of All Day IPA’s most redeeming qualities was its balance of malt and hop flavor for a low ABV beer. It started gentle up front with ample maltiness, followed by hoppy goodness on the back end.
All Day IPA was floral overall, with a dash of bitter pine. In the finish, its effervescence was perfectly timed to sharpen up with a drying splash of citrus. Although 42 IBUs are not sky high, it really seemed like Founders was able to coax additional hop bitterness out of this beer.
This session ale featured the enjoyable crispness of a lager all the way through. With a criminally clean finish, All Day evaporated right off our palates, leaving only traces of bitterness — “Did we just take a sip of beer?”
We are happy that Southern California is finally included in Founders’ distribution map. But we wished they were here since week one of the 2015 NFL season, because we’d be crushing these every Sunday!
Final Score: 3.5/5
After finally trying this beer, the national hype behind it was warranted. Founders All Day IPA was a solid session ale, and truly felt like it could be drank all day long thanks to its low ABV, light body, and crisp and clean finish.
