Brewer’s Notes and Ingedients
As it’s name suggests, this is no ordinary Brown Ale. At 6.6% ABV this ale is a testament to the craft of the American Brewer. The noticeable strength is balanced by a huge malt backbone of imported Maris Otter barley, the complex flavor profile comes from a combination of crystal, victory and roasted malts.

How did we decide on reviewing this beer? Because New English Brewing Company was fresh off a bronze medal win with Brewers Special Brown Ale at World Beer Cup for English-Style Brown Ale, and we had never tried it before. Congratulations once again to New English on their big win!
Whether this ale won an award or not, we were excited to try it since our experience with their dark ales like Zumbar and Adams Avenue have been nothing short of spectacular. Many in our local beer community feel that New English is one of the most underrated breweries in San Diego, and after having yet another awesome beer from them, we would have to agree.
Brewers Special Brown Ale poured a deep, dark chocolaty brown color with a thin covering of cream colored head. Looking at the goblet, it resembled a dark roast cup of coffee topped with latte foam. That supple coating of froth showed excellent retention, and lent an added creaminess to each sip for the rest of the glass.
A very traditional brown ale, Brewers Special was bold and robust with a hearty malt backbone. Like its aroma, the flavor profile was primarily roasted malts up front with a nutty toastiness that followed. The finish was clean, with a hint of lingering toffee and bitterness.
With its English roots, Brewers Special Brown Ale did not suffer from a lack of body. Its extra maltiness made for a thicker consistency, yet still managed to be very easy drinking for a heavier dark ale.
What we enjoyed most was how this beer was a straight down the middle brown ale that did not rely on additional ingredients like coffee or chocolate to deliver top-notch flavors. And we couldn’t get enough of that creamy layer of froth that came along with every sip. Mmmmmm…
Final Score: 4/5
We can easily see how Brewers Special Brown Ale has won so many awards for New English Brewing Co, and it’s definitely one of the best brown ales you can find around San Diego. We wished we had tried it sooner!
