Last week, Mikkeller Brewing San Diego released Shapes (Former) and Sparks (Gnister) in bottles, with some variation of Beer Geek on the way shortly. We still need to do a full write-up on the brewery itself, but until then here’s a review of Shapes (Former), a Belgian blonde ale.
Mikkeller SD Shapes (Former) poured a bright golden color that was mostly transparent, with partial haziness. Plenty of effervescence could be seen in the glass, and its pure white sea foam-like topper died down after a minute or so.
The yeast in this ale created a very pronounced aroma. Notes of bright citrus were found up front, where candied raisin took over. We wondered if they used locally sourced White Labs, or Mikkel brought his own worldly yeast cultures with him to San Diego? (guessing the latter)
Mikkeller can get quite creative with beer recipes, but Shapes was a straight-down-the-middle Belgian blonde ale, and we really enjoyed its approachability. On the palate, a quick dash of mild spice was paired with some sugary plum, with a drying lemony citrus finish.
This beer’s aroma and flavor were equally matched, but the best part of Shapes was the finish — it just vanished right off our palates. It was light, crisp, refreshing, and so easy drinking.
Mikkeller bottled this ale at a perfect time, since a bomber of this in the backyard during summertime does just perfect. We look forward to more bottle releases from them, and according to some artwork previews on Instagram, there’s a lot more on the way. Like craft beer drinkers in San Diego could get any more spoiled…
Final Score: 3.5/5
With Shapes, Mikkeller Brewing San Diego created a very drinkable, light bodied Belgian style blonde ale. It was quite aromatic, paired with candied fruit and fresh citrus on the palate, and a gentle finish.
