AleSmith offers two Belgian style ales year round – Horny Devil, a Belgian strong ale, and L’il Devil, a pale ale.
This AleSmith tap room exclusive takes L’il Devil, and adds fresh ginger during the brewing process. Its a Belgian-Asian fusion so to speak, which is what interested us in trying it.
If we were smart, we would have ordered an original L’il Devil to compare, since we had never tried that one before either…
Ginger L’il Devil was very light and refreshing, with an airy mouthfeel. It gave off a crispness, like cider.
As far as the taste, we were looking for a bit more ginger. But then again, we like to eat that spicy garnish by the slice when we go out for sushi, so maybe we were expecting too much.
The ginger might not have been as potent as we anticipated, but it made for a creative counter to the sweeter pale ale flavor that it began with.
We are not sure if this is seasonal summer beer, but it definitely hit the spot in this hot summer weather.
Final Score: 3/5
Ginger L’il Devil was one of the more creative herb/spice beers we have tried. It may not appeal to everyone, but any ginger fans should give it a try.
