San Diego Craft Breweries Continue Winning Ways at 2017 GABF
Last weekend the 36th annual Great American Beer Festival was held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Co. The continued popularity of the US craft beer segment was more than evident with a record number of beer submissions (7,923) from 2,217 breweries across the country.
This year Mike was fortunate enough to attend the festivities, and witness the awards ceremony firsthand. For a more detailed rundown of the weekend’s shenanigans be sure to catch the GABF Recap episode of Three B Zine Podcast. But for now, here’s Mike’s rundown of notables from the event with complete list of winners.

2017 was the first year of GABF since the unveiling of the Independent Beer Seal, which was proudly displayed in the front window of the convention center along with its “Independence Matters” slogan. The seal was affixed to many a display backboard inside the beer hall over the weekend. If you care about independently owned beer, the adoption rate of the seal looked very promising.
This article headline is true, since SD breweries did quite well in the beer competition. But this year marked a little bit of a downtick from last year’s performance of 18 medals, and no breweries winning any Brewpub / Brewing Company titles.
As San Diego continues to spread its wings across the country, its definitely becoming more problematic on how to count awards for locations outside the area. For example, Mother Earth’s Nampa facility won a medal from its Nampa facility. We are going to say that counts for San Diego, since the brand was founded as an SD company!
Second Chance Beer Company doubled down on last year’s gold for Tabula Rasa with another this year, while also adding a silver for Legally Red. New comers OB Brewery, and Ryan Brooks’ new Coronado Brewing Company off-shoot brand SouthNorte Beer Co both medaled for the first time.
San Diego breweries won a total of 15 medals. And cheers to our northern neighbors Artifex and Refuge who took home medals for Artifexican and Blood Orange Wit respectively.
