Amplified Cranks it Even Louder with Motörhead Born to Lose IPA
Amplified Ale Works has always been musically themed in their branding, beer names, and artwork. Lately the brewery has cinched up those musical ties even tighter, with an onslaught of collaborations.
In addition to helping with San Diego music festivals and events, the brewery has worked with local band Surefire Soul Ensemble on multiple occasions. Most recently for a tasty rye session beer, Surefire Soundcheck #6.
Where Amplified has really hit all the right notes is with their limited release cans of band-inspired beers. These special pint cans have ranged from plays on musical acts like Trois Cabrones (the Melvins Houdini), Juice Springsteen and The Yeast Street Band, and Reel Big Kolsch which was brewed alongside members of the actual band.
Those have been fantastic beers, but none have built the level of excitement as their forthcoming release, Born to Lose IPA. Brewed on behalf of legendary heavy metal band Motörhead, this bad-ass 4 pack debuts this Friday April 28th.
Working with Motörhead
This officially licensed beer came together after the untimely death of the band’s iconic, mutton-chopped, gravely-voiced lead singer Lemmy Kilmister. Lemmy lived a well documented fast life, and in December 2015 he lost a short battle to an aggressive form of cancer.
One year later a gathering of friends and family was planned for a posthumous birthday celebration at Lemmy’s favorite hangout, the Rainbow Bar and Grill. Amplified was asked to bottle a special beer for the event. According to owner Alex Pierson, that recipe was “an amped up version of their Pig Nose Pale Ale” called Soundcheck #5.
We are Motörhead, and we play rock ’n roll…
With the success of that exclusive release, Amplified was approached for an encore with another Motörhead themed beer meant for wider release. Born to Lose is for the fans, and named after part of the inscription on Lemmy’s Ace of Spades tattoo — “Born to lose, live to win.”
Judging by the looks of the label art, Motörhead fans should be very pleased to get in line for this one. Jack Gregory’s artwork is nothing short of glorious, and encapsulates the history of the band in a raucous scene featuring Snaggletooth front and center.
About Born to Lose IPA
For this beer, Pierson explained that Amplified set out to create a crisp and clean, approachable IPA in the mid 6% range. Born to Lose is a Citra-forward, traditional West Coast style IPA. There’s Columbus in the boil, Cascade in the whirlpool, and then it’s dry-hopped with you guessed it — Citra.
Born to Lose IPA will retail at $20 for a 4 pack at noon (12:00PM) on Friday April 28th at either Amplified Ale Works location in Miramar or Pacific Beach.
If you miss out on this extremely limited allocation, a small supply will be available online through thebeerconnect.com. There are already plans for a follow-up of this Motörhead beer in mid-June, with another limited run of cans.
